Third-Party Testing and Certificates of Analysis in Peptide Research

Quick answer: in laboratory research, reliable results depend on consistent materials. Independent testing takes the vendor out of the verification loop, and a batch-specific COA is the record that lets anyone check the claim.

The problem third-party testing solves

A vendor stating that a peptide is 99% pure is making a claim about their own product. A laboratory with no stake in the sale measuring that purity is producing evidence. The difference matters most when something goes wrong: a failed assay, an unexpected mass, a batch that behaves differently from the last one. With independent data the question can be answered. Without it, the question becomes an argument.

What independent testing looks like

  • A named laboratory, separate from the vendor, that you can contact.
  • Instrument data (chromatogram, mass spectrum), not just a summary number.
  • A batch number on the report that matches the vial.
  • A date that makes sense relative to when the batch was made.

Why every batch, not just the first

Synthesis is a process with variation. Two batches made the same way can differ in purity, water content, or the profile of side products. Testing one batch at launch and reusing the report for a year tells you about the launch batch only.

The COA as a research record

Reproducibility is the ability of someone else to get your result using your methods and materials. The COA is how the materials part of that sentence gets documented. Citing the batch number in a methods section lets another lab request the same material or evaluate whether a difference in results could come from a difference in input.
